Kings Point, N.Y. – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Director of Athletics, Susan Petersen Lubow announced today that Faststream Recruitment Inc of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) will donate $100,000 to the Academy’s Athletics Department over the next five years to become the National Dinner Sponsor of the Heidmar Blue and Gray Golf Classics.
Faststream Recruitment Managing Consultant and USMMA alumnus Tim Green ’94 has been a longtime supporter of the Heidmar Blue and Gray Golf Classics. “I felt it was appropriate to make a long term commitment to the Blue and Gray to ensure their continued success, as well as give back to the Academy. As a maritime recruiter, there is no better source of candidates or potential employers in our industry than the Heidmar Blue and Gray Golf Classics. Attending several tournaments last year was already a benefit to our organization.”
The Heidmar Blue and Gray Golf Classics are 12 national golf tournaments that benefit USMMA Athletics. The events attract Merchant Marine Academy alumni, Maritime Industry executives and Midshipmen families. In 2007, the Golf Classics raised a record $202,000 in net proceeds and attracted a record 1,160 golfers in 11 events. The tour will grow to 12 outings in 2008 and reach virtually every major U.S. shipping area.
The reason for this national effort is that the USMMA Athletics Department does not receive federal funds for its operating budget. The proceeds derived from the outings go directly to the athletic department to enhance the overall athletic experience for the entire campus. Approximately 66% of the entire regiment participates in varsity athletics while the entire regiment uses the facilities for physical fitness and education.
