The maritime skills gap in Singapore is about to be narrowed by the decision of Faststream to establish its Asia Pacific Headquarters in Singapore.

Faststream Recruitment PTE Ltd will launch on January 21st 2008 after unprecedented demand from Singapore based companies in the maritime sector for shore-based employees. This is due largely to continued regional growth in shipping and shipbuilding and makes Singapore an ideal location for Faststream’s Asia-Pacific recruitment business.

This latest edition to Faststream’s global network will focus specifically on recruiting for maritime companies in Singapore and the wider Asia Pacific region, including the Indian Subcontinent and Australasia.

The Singapore maritime sector continues to go from strength to strength and this growth shows no sign of slowing. However, most senior industry executives will list recruitment and retention to meet growth in demand as the sectors biggest challenge. It’s getting harder and harder for companies to find the right talent and increasingly they are calling upon the help of specialist recruiters like Faststream to help them meet their hiring plans. Faststream’s decision to establish in Singapore is as a direct result of more and more enquiries from companies in Singapore who want help in winning the war for talent.

Faststream’s Group Managing Director, Mark Charman spoke at last years Maritime HR Summit during Singapore Maritime Week which highlighted some of the moves that can be made to ensure the skills gap is narrowed. On Faststream’s Asia Pacific launch he commented: “The growth of Singapore as both a regional and international maritime hub has created a huge demand for experienced maritime professionals”.

“Finding these people is what we do, and do well, and many companies have been surprised by how quickly we have been able to help them source the people they need to grow their business. These are exciting times for Faststream and the reaction from both clients and candidates after learning about this move has been extremely encouraging”.

Mark Robertshaw has been appointed as Faststream’s Vice President Asia Pacific. Mark has lived and worked in the region for the last nine years and has a wealth of experience in the shipping industry both as a Ship Broker and in the liner trade. He commented: “The specialist service which Faststream can now offer in Asia is fundamental to ensuring that our clients staffing requirement are effectively met. The location of our regional office in the maritime hub of Singapore puts Faststream in the unique position of being able to offer local, regional and international recruitment resources”.
